Veiled Nation, A Poem

Veiled Nation
By: Felix Maxell

Too much government power is not only unhealthy, but also induces fear. Our rights and freedom our being taken, either by changing of a bill or tampering with the constitution to fit their needs, we are all affected somehow. “Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved”(Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince, 1513). That being said, the concept of complete government power is not far off, a nation built on secrecy and fear.

With endless funds to do what they need, their grasp on power is overwhelming. By no means is this right or fair, but what is? The same hundred members of our senate, voting for the same ideas and beliefs since they’ve been in office, slowly closing their fist on the American people. Squeeze us dry until we have nothing left to give, then make a law or so called “Stimulus” to only dig deeper into our pockets. Knock us down so the American people have nowhere else to turn. How is one able to get their voice heard? You can attend all the board meetings you want, get involved in government activities, anything to be part of the club. But in all reality our voice is small and unheard. Unless you have the means to fund this crusade, even then, the chance of survival is nil.

In contradiction many people want government hand outs, welfare and socialized medicine for example. In this aspect, sure it’s nice to be taken care or, but at what cost? "Those who prefer the tranquility of servitude had best be prepared to crouch down and lick the hands which feed you...may your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen"(Samuel Adams). A percent of tax payers hard earned money taken for those not able to find work or can't. Fast and cheap medicine, treating those less fortunate to afford decent care. Creating rifts amongst fellow Americans, classes will reemerge more than ever; some say that the government isn’t nearly involved enough, and just expect them to handle everything for them. The phrase “Carpe diem” comes to mind, this phrase was not created for the fact of knowing its words, but using them. We all have the ability to take what’s ours. Obviously we a need a regulated government and not some anarchy, being that chaos only breeds more chaos.

Elements of presidential power and limits seem minuscule; the President no more than the voice in our ears. To do anything he must first get through the house and senate for approval, keeping his power at bay. Giving the others around him all the power, call the shots, him being the pawn. The President speaks and the majority of the public listens, veiling our eyes from the truth or the gritty darkness of the facts. Twisting words to meet our needs and appeal to our senses, allowing for us to think the way he sees fit.

As a wise World War two vet states “we Americans, are like cows to the pasture. You are free to do as you please, as long you stay inside the fence and continue to give milk”(Jack Maule). Meaning, one who thinks outside the box is easily silenced. Last thing the “man” wants is for their cows to hop the fence, or to stop producing milk. So how does one deal with this dilemma? Adapt and evolve, or some alienate themselves from society. More or less pick your poison, because we’re all getting bit somehow.

On the other hand, maybe our government isn’t doing enough. Without a strong government body, our country shall fall ruin. Mass anarchy, loaded nukes just waiting to fire. States fighting to become independent, mass revolutions in every corner of the nation. Like a chicken with its head chopped off, running around on pure blood flow and adrenaline. That does not make for a stable nation. No order of operations to follow, rules of engagement tossed out the window. In time this so called “great” nation would seem third world.

“...the moment the idea is admitted into society, that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence”(John Adams). So when we as Americans raise our hands, come to our aid. If not risen leave us alone.
That being said let us grow as a unified nation, not some dictatorship or some tyranny. Build off what we have, not to digress to a primitive state. Find an equal balance of power and the common good of man. Where one's goal can be reached no matter what their social status may be, a greater good can be achieved. We are a young nation, amongst all the rest, and time is of the essence. Make our voice heard whatever it takes, our moment is now. "I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpation”(James Madison). Meaning, us as the people, need to keep our eyes open, be aware of our surroundings, and let no big or small power take what’s ours. If Americans sit stagnate and do nothing, we are merely the unobtainable itch on our lowers backs. No matter the angle, or element of the cause, the itch is there. The choice being, are we going to let the itch annoy, or take action and fix the issue. The world is not some beautiful butterfly, and those that see it that way are blind. Open our eyes and “seize the day”, let no man silence this great nation or the codes and laws that we are built on. If we can, take the time to ask the question, what would our founding fathers do or think?
